Smoke detectors sound when there are smoke particles in the air. Smoke detectors come in three forms:
• Ionization - Responsive to flaming fires
• Photoelectric - Responsive to smoldering fires
• Dual Sensor - Incorporates both technologies for optimal protection
Though some detectors are equipped with 10-year lithium ion batteries, many others require 9V, AA or AAA batteries. Hardwire models often have backup batteries as well. Keep batteries stocked for easy and fast replacement when needed.
Used properly by a trained individual, fire extinguishers can prevent fires from growing out of control. Ensure fire extinguishers are stored in fire suppression cabinets to protect your extinguishers from theft or damage.
In the unfortunate event of a fire that cannot be contained, it is crucial to have a well-designed, well-rehearsed evacuation plan. Secure escape ladders and outfit hallways/doorways with ample emergency exit lighting and signage.
